Magazzù MX-13 Gran Coupé: the video test of an iconic Maxi-RIB

In the Maxi-RIB scenario—a segment currently experiencing strong growth and constant evolution—simply increasing size or raising performance levels is no longer enough to truly stand out. Among the many new models, often too similar to one another, only a few are able to distinguish themselves with a strong and lasting identity, to the point of being considered truly iconic. The Magazzù MX-13 Gran Coupé undoubtedly belongs to this exclusive elite: a RIB that, at first glance, conveys character, design coherence, and a clear vision of what a high-end Maxi-RIB should be today. An extraordinary mix of style, elegance, and performance that we had the pleasure of testing in the waters of the Gulf of Mondello for a new and exciting video sea trial.

Magazzù MX-13 Gran Coupé Sea Trial

Stepping aboard a Magazzù is never just a “outing”: it is an experience that thrills from the very first moment, thanks to a perfect harmony between design, build quality, and unique cruising emotions that are unmatched in this specific segment of the boating industry. Every model from the Palermo-based shipyard is born from a design philosophy that blends artisanal craftsmanship, premium materials, and cutting-edge technical solutions, with an almost obsessive attention to detail that is immediately clear as soon as you step on board.

The model we are about to test today is powered by twin Volvo Penta D6 400 sterndrive engines—more than a promising premise for a truly engaging sea trial, especially considering that the RIB features a stepped hull, a true hallmark of Magazzù’s entire MX range. This technical solution has been specifically developed to ensure stable and efficient seakeeping, while simultaneously optimizing the balance between power and fuel consumption.

Without further hesitation, we take the helm of our Magazzù MX-13 Gran Coupé. We begin our test at idle speed, leaving the harbor and heading toward open water. Even at just 4 knots, with a long lateral swell and the sea on the beam, the form stability of this RIB immediately reveals its solid character, with no hint of roll, instantly conveying a sense of total control and exceptional comfort.

Magazzù MX-13 Gran Coupé test

Once out of the harbor, we start to open the throttles. The response from the two Volvo Penta engines is virtually instantaneous. The Magazzù MX-13 Gran Coupé quickly lifts out of the water and, supported by its renowned stepped hull, breaks free of its wake and transitions into planing at just 12 knots effortlessly, accelerating smoothly. The sensation is that of gliding on a cushion of air—such is the level of comfort perceived on board—thanks to a superb hull design that, of course, we are eager to put to the test to its full potential.

So we begin to speed up and, in the blink of an eye, we reach one of the most “classic” cruising speeds for this type of boat: at 20 knots, the engines are turning at just under 2,000 rpm, consuming only 3.4 liters per nautical mile. Not bad at all for a RIB of this size.

We accelerate again and, running at 30 knots, fuel consumption remains virtually unchanged: 3.2 liters per nautical mile! This is unmistakable proof of a well-designed hull, engineered to deliver maximum cruising comfort while enhancing efficiency and performance.

But now it’s time to get serious—so throttles down! We push the levers fully forward without hesitation and, heading into the waves, our maxi-RIB starts delivering truly thrilling speeds: 37, 39, 44… 45.6 knots! The Magazzù MX-13 Gran Coupé reaches its top speed, running solid and confident, with stability and onboard comfort that are well above average. Once again, the real surprise comes from fuel consumption: just 3.8 liters per nautical mile! A clear sign of a boat designed to be not only fast, but also highly efficient.

Adrenaline is now running high and, easing back to around 30 knots, we decide to put the Magazzù through a wide, fast turn. A maneuver that would put in trouble many boats, yet one that our MX-13 Gran Coupé executes with ease and precision. The level of confidence provided by the stepped hull is so high that we don’t hesitate to accelerate again. We reach 40 knots as our wake begins to trace a perfect circle on the water. With the sea astern, we once again bury the throttles and, in just a few seconds, reach a new top speed—this time topping out at 46.9 knots!

We’re clearly enjoying ourselves and, holding 30 knots without slowing down, we try to push the boat to its limits, throwing it into a series of increasingly tight turns and counter-turns. But nothing fazes it: the MX-13 responds instantly and with pinpoint precision, delivering excellent seakeeping and truly outstanding cruising comfort.

It’s time to head back to the harbor, but not before performing what has become a must in our sea trials: the acceleration test! Throttles at neutral, we engage forward gear and… full power! Even running into the sea, the RIB reaches 46.9 knots in just 25 seconds! A truly astonishing performance for a 13-meter RIB.
